Both hikes can be challenging depending on where the chimpanzee or gorillas nested the previous night.
The Chimp trekking differs from gorilla trekking tours Rwanda because the sightings are a bit more sporadic and rushed, but worthwhile nonetheless as opposed to gorillas that stay for a while in one location.
The wildlife junkies have a strong connection with Rwanda and the primary reason for this is the stunning primates residing in the dense forest and volcanic mountains of the country. Though Rwanda is the iconic land for spotting Mountain gorillas, there are a number of other primates also available who are equally entertaining your desired safari.
Encounters with gorillas as they go about their daily lives are carefully managed, with expert trackers and guides leading small groups of tourists up bamboo-covered slopes to spend a precious and awe-inspiring hour just a few feet away from the gentle creatures. You are at liberty to choose which group to visit out of the twelve groups habituated in Rwanda.
These groups are constantly monitored and protected by park rangers, with each group coming into contact with tourists for a strict maximum of one hour per day. The encounter is as intimate and as unobtrusive as possible since only eight tracking permits are issued per group.
You will be required to gather at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi at 7am, to be allocated a family group on that day according to fitness levels, as well as being briefed on protocols and rules for visiting the gorillas.
Chimpanzee Tracking: Considered as the cousins of humans sharing 98% of Human DNA Chimpanzees tracking is one of the adventurous activities throughout the year. Nyungwe Forest National Park is the prime spot for chimpanzee tracking.
Chimpanzee trekking is a complete ball game from gorilla trekking, chimps are stubborn, noisy and very mobile. Because they are lighter, they spend a lot of their time on top of the trees unlike mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are very gentle and peaceful.
They will eat quietly and interact with less provocation and drama in the group. Tracking chimpanzees requires one to be fit enough in order to follow the primates for long periods as they make quick movements both on the ground and on top of trees before settling down.
